The Department of Biotechnology located at Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta School of Biosciences in IIT Madras will be offering a 9-Day STP/FDP in ‘Emerging Trends in Life Sciences & Biotechnology’ as a part of teacher training for faculty (teaching students at the undergraduate level).

Background & Scope

The programme will encompass three modules spanning the teacher training needs addressed in NEP-2020, covering the following,

1. Bio-pedagogy – refined pedagogical training focused on biology
2. R&D training in fundamentals/ advanced/ emerging topics in Life Sciences and Biotechnology,
3. An insight into Bio-Entrepreneurship for translational relevance.

The training modules will have an appropriate balance of theory and practical (wet-lab exercises) sessions, along with mini-workshops and site visits. The lectures and practical training will be handled by the faculty and technical staff at the Department of Biotechnology, who are adequately trained and hold expertise in the topics covered, thereby aiming at motivating the trainees in the domains of life sciences and biotechnology.

Rationale for choosing the Thematic area

Chosen topics and lab techniques encompass three important aspects:

1. Understanding of fundamental biology,
2. Technology development for healthcare
3. Entrepreneurial prospects of laboratory research.

The total number of participants per training will be 50, divided into groups (for classroom exercises and lab sessions).

This training initiative is designed for faculty members involved in teaching undergraduate-level chemistry, with a focus on enhancing conceptual understanding and technical exposure.

The programme is structured into two key components:

1. Expert Talks on Contemporary Chemistry – Delivered by faculty members specializing in diverse domains of chemistry.
2. Hands-on Training with Advanced Instrumentation – Practical sessions using state-of-the-art equipment.

The primary outcome of the training program is to upskill the teachers to induce a collaborative learning culture among the student community for continuous improvement and innovation in learning Mathematics. Further, the program is envisioned to create a research culture among college teachers that their students can imbibe. We also expect that this will lead to increased enrolment in mathematics-related courses in Indian Universities through teacher training on student engagement, inclusive education, and vocational training.

• Real Analysis (RA) Sequences and Series of Real Numbers: convergence of sequences, bounded and monotone sequences, Cauchy sequences, Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem, absolute convergence, tests of convergence for series – comparison test, ratio test, root test; Power series (of one real variable), radius and interval of convergence, term-wise differentiation and integration of power series.
• Functions of One Real Variable (DC): Limit, continuity, intermediate value property, differentiation, Rolle’s Theorem, mean value theorem, L'Hospital rule, Taylor's theorem, Taylor’s series, maxima and minima, Riemann integration (definite integrals and their properties), fundamental theorem of calculus.
• Multivariable Calculus (MC): Functions of Two or Three Real Variables: limit, continuity, partial derivatives, total derivative, maxima and minima.
• Integral Calculus (IC): Double and triple integrals, change of order of integration, calculating surface areas and volumes using double integrals, calculating volumes using triple integrals.
• Differential Equations (DE): Bernoulli’s equation, exact differential equations, integrating factors, orthogonal trajectories, homogeneous differential equations, method of separation of variables, linear differential equations of second order with constant coefficients, method of variation of parameters, Cauchy-Euler equation.
• Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces (VS): Linear independence of vectors, basis, dimension, linear transformations, matrix representation, range space, null space, rank-nullity theorem.
• Matrices (M): Systems of linear equations, rank, nullity, rank-nullity theorem, inverse, determinant, eigenvalues, eigenvectors.
• Groups (G): Cyclic groups, abelian groups, non-abelian groups, permutation groups, normal subgroups, quotient groups, Lagrange's theorem for finite groups, group homomorphisms
