Japan Intensifies Efforts to Attract Indian Students and Professionals
Japan is making a strategic push to attract Indian students and professionals, positioning itself as a stable alternative to traditional Western destinations amid increasing global competition for skilled talent. With only 1,600 Indian students in May 2024, Japan sees significant growth potential.
Government-Backed Educational Initiatives
The Japanese government has rolled out targeted outreach in India, promoting the MEXT (Monbukagakusho) scholarship covering tuition and living expenses for international students. Japan's top universities, including the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, offer competitive programs in engineering and sciences, with Kyoto University counting 13 Nobel laureates among its alumni.
Both universities now offer English-medium courses to reduce language barriers for Indian applicants, addressing persistent myths about mandatory Japanese language requirements. Over the past three years, many leading universities have launched English programs and enhanced international student support.
Strategic Positioning Amid US Policy Changes
The increase in US H-1B visa fees has prompted many Indian tech professionals and students to reconsider options. Japan offers a more structured and reliable pathway from education to employment, with JETRO facilitating connections with Indian startups and entrepreneurs through mentorship and business partnerships.
Japan addresses safety concerns with clear communication and established protocols, maintaining low crime rates. While curriculum structures remain relatively rigid compared to Western systems, Japan emphasises career stability and long-term growth opportunities for Indian talent.
CISCE Announces Major Curriculum Revamp for 2027-28
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations has announced a comprehensive curriculum overhaul for kindergarten to Class 8, implementing an activity-based, experiential learning framework from the 2027-28 academic year. The initiative moves beyond rote learning toward real-world skill application.
Holistic Development and Global Alignment
CISCE Chairman Joseph Emmanuel explained that the framework fosters holistic development while keeping pace with global skill requirements. The curriculum will be mapped with global skill sets and competition competencies, implemented alongside the National Education Policy.
The revised syllabus retains current system elements while emphasising interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches. Teachers will receive training for activity-driven methods, making learning more interactive and engaging. The curriculum aligns with NCERT standards to ensure consistency across educational boards.
Digital Platform and Infrastructure Development
CISCE plans to launch a dedicated digital platform covering academics, extracurricular activities, and environmental studies. The Council is establishing a regional office in Bengaluru, home to nearly 400 CISCE-affiliated schools, demonstrating a commitment to regional educational support.
The new curriculum design helps children apply classroom concepts to practical situations, preparing them for contemporary workplace demands while maintaining academic rigour. Students and parents can expect Class 10 and 12 board exam timetables soon, as CISCE follows CBSE in publishing examination schedules.
