CCPA Fines Two IAS Coaching Institutes ₹8 Lakh Each for Misleading Advertisements
The Central Consumer Protection Authority has fined Dikshant IAS and Abhimanu IAS ₹8 lakh each for misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices, according to the official order issued under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The action was taken after complaints from successful UPSC candidates who accused the institutes of using their names and photos without permission.
Dikshant IAS Violations
The CCPA's investigation revealed that both institutes published exaggerated claims of success without credible evidence, using photographs and names of successful UPSC candidates to advertise high selection numbers, creating the impression that many toppers were their students. Mini Shukla (AIR 96, UPSC 2021) complained that Dikshant IAS used her name and image in its advertisements without her consent, clarifying that her only interaction with the institute was attending a single mock interview session organised jointly with another academy.
The inquiry found that Dikshant IAS had promoted "200+ Results in UPSC CSE 2021" but failed to prove the authenticity of these claims. The CCPA noted that the institute's advertisements omitted key details about the candidates' association, misleading aspirants about its contribution to their success.
Abhimanu IAS Similar Violations
Natasha Goyal (AIR 175, UPSC 2022) filed a complaint against Abhimanu IAS for using her photo without authorisation. The institute's ads claimed "2200+ Selections since Inception" and "10+ Selections in IAS Top 10," yet provided no clear data to verify its involvement. Further inquiry revealed that out of 139 candidates showcased in the 2023 campaign, 88 cleared exams independently. The CCPA ruled that such advertisements deprived students of accurate information and violated consumer rights.
Growing Regulatory Scrutiny
With these actions, the CCPA has now issued 57 notices to coaching institutes and imposed penalties exceeding ₹98.6 lakh on 27 institutions. The regulator has directed all erring institutes to withdraw misleading content and ensure transparency in future promotions. Earlier this year, two renowned Delhi-based institutes – Drishti IAS and Vision IAS – faced penalties of ₹5 lakh and ₹3 lakh, respectively, for making similar claims about student results.
The move underlines the CCPA's ongoing effort to bring accountability to India's fast-growing coaching industry, protecting aspirants from deceptive marketing practices that exploit successful candidates' achievements without authorisation.
