J&K National Law University to Begin Operations from April 2026

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Wednesday that the National Law University will start functioning in the valley from April next year, according to his statement in the Legislative Assembly. The Chief Minister made these remarks while speaking on a private member's resolution moved by Congress MLA from Bandipora, Nizam-Ud-Din Bhat.

Assembly Resolution and Government Support

The resolution stated: "This House unanimously resolves to impress upon the Government to initiate the process of establishing the Jammu and Kashmir National Law University at Srinagar, without any further delay, as the funds earmarked for the first phase have already been provided." The resolution was passed by the assembly by voice vote after Chief Minister Abdullah confirmed his government has no objections to it.

Abdullah stated that the government is actively working on expanding the education infrastructure. "We want to expand it and we are trying," he said. Regarding the location, the Chief Minister indicated that while he will not immediately specify where it will be established as long as it comes to J&K, the proposal will be discussed with the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, and the J&K chief secretary.

Temporary Campus at Ompora, Budgam

The Chief Minister revealed that the university will start functioning from April next year from Ompora in central Kashmir's Budgam district, where the government had previously decided to set up a software technological park, but the Air Force objected on grounds that the antenna at the park could interfere with their communication system. "That campus is vacant. If everything goes well, by April next fiscal year we should be able to start classes in rented accommodation," Abdullah stated.

He added, "We are not immediately building a campus. We will have to start in a rented accommodation to start admission and classes. If we cannot find a better location, we will start the National Law University at that place." The CM emphasised that when the NLU starts functioning, students of J&K who are forced to study law outside can pursue legal education within the Union Territory.

Addressing allegations about slow progress, Abdullah clarified that work is constantly ongoing in the civil secretariat. "If we give details on a daily basis, you will get tired of it," he remarked, asserting that others also have a role in establishing the institution beyond the government's financial contribution.

NMC Releases Revised NEET UG 2026 Seat Matrix

The National Medical Commission has released the revised seat matrix for MBBS and BDS admissions across medical colleges for the academic year 2025-26, according to the official notification. Initially, the total number of seats was listed as 1,28,925, but this figure has been revised to 1,28,875, representing a reduction of 50 seats.

Seat Addition and Discrepancy Resolution

For the academic year 2025-26, 11,350 new seats have been introduced, bringing the overall count, including those at AIIMS and JIPMER to 1,28,875. Interestingly, a previously issued version of the revised MBBS seat matrix had indicated an increase of 11,400 seats, creating a discrepancy of 100 seats compared to the latest revision.

During the 2025-26 renewal process, the Commission removed 456 seats due to typographical errors that occurred while updating seat data. The seat matrix provides region-wise MBBS seat distribution across medical colleges throughout India, offering clarity to NEET UG aspirants regarding available positions.

Stray Round Counselling and Student Verification

In another notification, the Commission has asked all postgraduate super speciality course students to visit the website and verify their names and details. In case their names are not found, they are instructed to connect with the respective Directorate of Medical Education or the designated counselling authority for resolution.

Candidates who were not allotted seats in earlier rounds of NEET UG counselling 2025 are eligible to participate in the stray round of seat allotment. According to the official schedule, registration for the stray round will commence on November 4, and participating institutions will release the tentative seat matrix on the same day.

Applicants selected in the stray round must report to their allotted college with all necessary documents to confirm their admission. Failure to join the allotted seat during this round will result in disqualification from appearing in the NEET exam for one year and forfeiture of counselling fees.

Delhi Government Announces Recruitment of 5,346 Teachers

The Delhi government has announced the appointment of 5,346 trained graduate teachers (TGTs) in government and municipal schools, marking a major step to strengthen classroom learning and ensure individual attention for students from Classes 6 to 10, according to an official statement released today. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised that the initiative reflects her government's focus on providing students with a nurturing and high-quality learning environment.

Addressing Critical Teacher Shortage

According to official data from the Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi government schools currently have more than 70,000 teachers catering to over 18 lakh students across the capital. However, around 10,000 teaching posts remain vacant, leading to uneven student-teacher ratios in several schools.

Education experts have long highlighted the need to recruit additional teachers to reduce classroom pressure and improve teaching outcomes, especially in core subjects such as mathematics, science, and languages. The new appointments would help improve the overall academic experience by addressing the shortage of teachers and ensuring more effective student engagement.

Application Timeline and Deployment Strategy

A circular issued by the Directorate of Education on October 3 stated that applications for the vacant TGT posts opened on October 9 and will close on November 7. The new batch of teachers will be deployed across the Delhi government and municipal schools after the selection process is completed.

Officials stated that the appointments will play a vital role in implementing innovative teaching practices and improving the quality of public education in Delhi. The recruitment drive is expected to support the government's broader goal of upgrading school infrastructure and learning outcomes.

The government indicated that the addition of new teachers will allow more one-on-one interaction between teachers and students, particularly in overcrowded classrooms. This forms part of continuing efforts to make government schools more efficient, inclusive, and student-centred, ensuring equal learning opportunities for all children, particularly those from economically weaker sections.
