Tamil Nadu Schedules Three Special TET Examinations in 2026

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has announced three special Teachers' Eligibility Test examinations scheduled for January, July, and December 2026, following the Supreme Court's directive mandating TET qualification for all teachers handling Classes 1-8 in government and government-aided schools.

Comprehensive Implementation Timeline and Process

According to the government order dated October 13, 2025, the Teachers Recruitment Board has been authorised to issue notifications for these special examinations. The first notification is expected in the last week of November 2025, with the initial phase (Paper I and II) scheduled for January 24-25, 2026.

Over 1.7 lakh teachers in government schools remain unqualified for TET, with many private school teachers also affected by the ruling. The Supreme Court clarified that all teachers must clear TET within two years to continue service, except those with less than five years remaining before retirement. Additionally, a TET qualification is now a prerequisite for promotions with no exemptions granted.

Support Systems and Historical Context

The department has directed District Institutes of Education and Training to organise special coaching sessions for teachers appearing in upcoming tests. A senior education official confirmed that additional rounds may be conducted in 2027 based on the number of teachers who remain unqualified after the 2026 examinations.

Since its inception in 2012, Tamil Nadu has conducted six TET examinations with 37.28 lakh candidates appearing. Only about 1.68 lakh candidates (4.5%) have successfully cleared the test, highlighting the challenging nature of the examination. The state government has also filed a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking clarification on certain aspects of the ruling, including its retrospective application.

UK Implements Stricter English Language Requirements for Skilled Visa Applicants

The UK government has introduced tougher English language test requirements for visa applicants, including those from India, as part of a broader immigration crackdown. The new 'Secure English Language Test' will be mandatory for all skilled workers from January 8, 2026.

Enhanced Testing Standards and Integration Requirements

The new requirements mandate that applicants demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to A-Level or Class 12 standard (B2 level) across speaking, listening, reading, and writing. UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that the measures ensure migrants "learn our language and play their part" in contributing to national life.

The test will be conducted by Home Office-approved providers, with results verified as part of the subsequent visa application process. This change aims to ensure applicants are "better able to integrate into life in the UK" according to official statements.

Comprehensive Immigration Policy Changes

Additional changes include reducing the Graduate Route visa period for international students from two years to 18 months from January 1, 2027, though PhD graduates retain three-year eligibility. Financial requirements for student visas will increase for 2025-2026, with maintenance funds rising to £1,529 per month in London and £1,171 elsewhere.

The Immigration Skills Charge will increase by 32%, requiring small organisations to pay £480 per sponsored worker annually (up from £364) and medium/large organizations £1,320 (up from £1,000). However, the High Potential Individual route will double university participation and cap places at 8,000 annually.

IIT Roorkee Launches Advanced Quantum Computing Certificate Program

IIT Roorkee has unveiled a 6.5-month Advanced Certificate in Quantum Computing: Algorithms and AI/ML, designed to prepare professionals for the emerging quantum era. The online program, offered through the Continuing Education Centre in partnership with TimesPro, combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience on platforms including Qiskit, PennyLane, and IBM Quantum Systems.

Comprehensive Curriculum and Practical Applications

The program covers quantum internet protocols, secure communication, quantum algorithms, and quantum machine learning across five modules: Introduction to Quantum Computing, Quantum Algorithms and Software, Quantum Communications and Networks, Quantum Machine Learning, and Quantum Machine Learning Applications.

Participants will work on real-world simulations and projects across finance, healthcare, optimisation, image classification, and drug discovery sectors. The curriculum includes landmark quantum algorithms such as Shor's, Grover's, and Simon's, implementation of Quantum Key Distribution protocols, and development of advanced QML models, including QSVMs, QNNs, and Quantum GANs.

Career Pathways and Market Context

Professor Kaushik Ghosh, Coordinator at CEC, emphasised that the program bridges theory and real-world deployment, enabling professionals to progress from prototypes to pilot projects in data-intensive areas like security, optimisation, and healthcare. Graduates can pursue careers as Quantum Software Developers, Quantum Machine Learning Engineers, Quantum Algorithm Researchers, Quantum Data Scientists, AI Product Developers, and Security Analysts/Cryptographers.

The launch aligns with rapid growth in the global quantum computing market, valued at USD 1.42 billion in 2024 and expected to reach USD 4.24 billion by 2030 at a 20.5% CAGR. This growth is fueled by government initiatives, corporate investments, and quantum-ready infrastructure development.
