Kendriya Vidyalayas Grapple with Over 10,000 Staff Vacancies

Kendriya Vidyalayas across India are facing a significant staffing crunch with more than 10,000 vacancies, according to data shared in the Lok Sabha by the Ministry of Education. As of November 1, 2025, there are 8,457 teaching positions and 1,716 non-teaching positions vacant across the system, according to the official statement.

Staffing Crisis and Vacancy Context

From the sanctioned posts of 56,520, Kendriya Vidyalayas have been able to fill only 46,347 posts, including both teaching and non-teaching staff. This represents a vacancy rate exceeding 18%, significantly impacting educational delivery across 1,280 Kendriya Vidyalayas functioning nationwide.

Under teaching positions, the highest recruitment based on category was for unreserved candidates with 17,427 filled posts, followed by Other Backwards Classes (13,211), EWS (1,114), SC (7,235), and ST (2,970). The distribution reflects India's reservation framework while highlighting uneven representation across categories.

Contributing Factors and Continuous Recruitment Efforts

Vacancies in KVs arise due to multiple factors, including the opening of new Kendriya Vidyalayas, retirement, resignation, promotion of employees, transfer, employees going on lien to another department, and upgradation of schools. Due to these ongoing dynamics, filling vacancies is a continuous process, with efforts made to fill positions as per relevant recruitment rules.

Since 2014, there have been 30,876 recruitments under teaching staff, with total recruitment across all years, categories, and post types since 2014 reaching 33,350. The year 2022-23 represented the largest recruitment cycle with 11,733 teachers recruited for KVs.

Contractual Staffing and Interim Solutions

To prevent disruption in the teaching-learning process, Kendriya Vidyalayas appoint teachers on a contractual basis at the local level whenever regular or leave vacancies arise. These appointments are temporary until a regular incumbent joins, and tenure cannot be fixed in advance.

The academic session 2018-19 had the highest contractual engagement figure before the pandemic, with 9,539 teachers. In 2022-23, a total of 11,733 offers and appointments were made, with 10,462 contractual teachers appointed—the highest ever contractual recruitment by KV since 2014. As of 2024-2025, there are 6,920 contractual teachers in KVs.

Declining Admissions Threaten Institutional Viability

While the government sanctioned 85 new KVs in December 2024 and 57 new KVs in October 2025, there has been a significant decline in student admissions. In 2020-21, admissions stood at 1,95,081, declining gradually to 1,82,846 in 2021-22 and further to 1,57,914 in 2022-23. Although there was a slight recovery in 2023-24 with 1,75,386 new enrollments, numbers dropped sharply again in 2024-25, reaching a five-year low of 1,39,660.

This downward trend indicates a consistent dip in fresh admissions, with the latest figure showing a reduction of over 55,000 students compared to 2020-21, creating a paradoxical situation where the government expands KV infrastructure while facing declining enrollment numbers.

Ministry of Women and Child Development Opens Paid Internship Programme

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has opened applications for its 2026 internship cycle, inviting women from non-Tier-I cities and rural parts of India to apply for the February-March term, according to the official announcement. The application window remains open from December 1 to 10, 2025, with all submissions made through the official portal.

Targeted Outreach and Eligibility Criteria

The programme is open exclusively to women between 21 and 40 years of age who are students, research scholars, teachers, or social activists associated with any academic or non-academic institution. For the upcoming term, the ministry has restricted eligibility to candidates residing in non-Tier-I cities or rural regions, ensuring greater representation from underserved areas.

The internship aims to give selected candidates hands-on experience in the ministry's ongoing schemes, policy work, and field-level activities. Interns may be assigned pilot projects or micro-studies linked to various programmes, gaining an understanding of how government initiatives for women and children are implemented on the ground.

Comprehensive Support and Structured Learning

The two-month WCD internship is designed to orient participants to government policies, flagship schemes, and institutional processes. Through short-term assignments, the ministry aims to encourage fresh thinking and create a pipeline of young professionals who can contribute to policy research, reporting, and analysis in the social sector.

Interns may engage in research, data analysis, field interactions, and preparation of policy papers. The programme facilitates interactions with officials responsible for implementing key schemes, as well as with stakeholders from partner ministries and organisations.

Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend of ₹20,000, with the ministry reimbursing travel expenses incurred during the internship. Hostel accommodation in Delhi will be provided for all participants, ensuring that women from smaller towns and rural regions can participate without logistical barriers.

United Nations Opens Young Professionals Programme Applications

The United Nations has officially opened applications for its prestigious Young Professionals Programme (YPP) 2025 cycle, offering early-career professionals from participating countries a pathway to join the UN Secretariat as international civil servants, according to the official announcement. The application window closes on December 14, 2025, giving aspiring candidates a limited timeframe to apply.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Process

Candidates must be nationals of a participating country, hold at least a first-level university degree relevant to their chosen exam area, be 32 years or younger in the year of examination, and demonstrate fluency in English or French. The application process requires reviewing job openings on the UN Careers Portal or the Inspira platform, with detailed requirements listed for each opening.

Applicants are encouraged to watch the YPP Application Guide Videos and consult the general UN Applicant Guide available through Inspira. All applications undergo screening for eligibility, including nationality, age, education, and language proficiency.

Multi-Stage Examination and Placement Structure

The YPP entrance examination typically consists of multiple stages: an online exam often conducted in two stages with only successful candidates advancing, and interviews for those passing the online assessment. Candidates invited to the exam gain access to the UN Online Examinations & Tests System, including practice materials, sample questions, and suggested reading lists.

Successful candidates are placed on a three-year roster used to fill UN Secretariat vacancies. Roster placement does not guarantee immediate employment but provides access to position opportunities. Contracts and levels vary: P-1 for bachelor's degree holders with no work experience, and P-2 for bachelor's degree holders with two years' experience or master's degree holders with no work experience.

Appointees receive a two-year fixed-term contract initially, with potential for a continuing contract upon satisfactory performance. They may be assigned to UN offices worldwide, including Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva, Nairobi, New York, Santiago, or Vienna. After two years, YPP staff may participate in the Managed Reassignment Programme to explore new roles and broaden career opportunities.
