Government Survey: Class 3 Learning Still Lags Behind Pre-Covid Levels
Despite improvements since the pandemic, a new government survey reveals that Class 3 students’ learning outcomes in language and mathematics remain below pre-Covid benchmarks. The latest PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan, conducted in December 2024, assessed over 21 lakh students across India. While there was some recovery from 2021 levels, the national average scores in 2024—64% in language and 60% in mathematics—are still lower than the 66.7% and 63% recorded in 2017, respectively.
The survey highlights particular weaknesses in reading comprehension and geometric concepts, signalling a need for targeted interventions to help students fully recover lost ground due to pandemic disruptions.
