India's Education Headlines: Major Reforms & Opportunities (21 June to 27 June)

The Indian education sector is currently undergoing a period of profound transformation, marked by a concerted effort to enhance student welfare, expand accessibility, foster skill development, and achieve global recognition. These ongoing changes underscore a forward-looking approach, aiming to create a more resilient, equitable, and future-ready learning environment across the nation. The latest developments highlight significant policy shifts, increased financial support, strategic infrastructure expansion, and notable international achievements, collectively pointing towards a dynamic and inclusive educational future.

CBSE's Landmark Examination Reforms

A Student-Centric Approach to Reduce Stress and Enhance Performance

A significant pedagogical shift is underway with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announcing a new policy allowing Class 10 students to appear for board examinations twice in a single academic year, commencing from the 2026 academic session. This reform is designed to alleviate the considerable examination stress often associated with high-stakes, single-attempt assessments. Under the revised scheme, the first examination will be mandatory, scheduled for mid-February. Students seeking to improve their scores or those who may have fallen short in up to three subjects will have the opportunity to appear for a second, optional examination in May. Eligibility for this second attempt requires students to have passed at least three core subjects in the initial examination.

The results for the first phase of examinations are anticipated in April, while the outcomes of the second phase will be declared in June, providing students with a timely opportunity to enhance their academic standing. Notably, internal assessments will be conducted only once during the academic year, prior to the first board examination, ensuring consistency in evaluation. This strategic move aligns directly with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for more flexible and student-friendly assessment methods. The primary objective is to shift the focus from a singular, high-pressure testing event to a system that promotes continuous learning and offers a crucial second chance without the burden of waiting an entire year for re-attempts. This initiative is poised to significantly reduce student anxiety and could lead to improved overall academic performance by allowing students to learn from their first experience and apply those lessons in a subsequent attempt. The success of this model for Class 10 may also pave the way for similar reforms in Class 12 examinations in the future.

Boosting Accessibility and Financial Support in Higher Education

IIT Delhi Unveils Major Scholarship & Fee Waiver Initiatives

In a crucial move to ensure that financial constraints do not impede access to premier technical education, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has announced a comprehensive scheme of scholarships and fee waivers, offering support of up to ₹1 lakh for students qualifying through JEE-Advanced 2025. This initiative is particularly timely as Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling rounds are underway, addressing financial concerns for many aspirants.

The institute's Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarship scheme provides substantial assistance, including ₹4,000 per month and a full tuition fee waiver, to approximately 25% of its undergraduate students (BTech, MA, MSc, MPP) whose annual family income does not exceed ₹8 lakh. The renewal of these awards is contingent upon maintaining a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.0 and annual income verification. Further extending its commitment to financial inclusivity, IIT Delhi offers an Institute Free Studentship, which provides full tuition fee exemptions to an additional 10% of students who meet similar income criteria. Moreover, all Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) students at IIT Delhi are fully exempt from tuition fees, irrespective of their family income. Beyond tuition, the institute also provides free hostel seat rent and a monthly pocket allowance of ₹1,000 for students from families earning under ₹8 lakh, ensuring essential living expenses are covered. Complementing these institutional provisions, IIT Delhi administers over 120 donor-funded scholarships, ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹1 lakh annually. These scholarships are awarded based on various criteria, including income, academic performance, specific disciplines, gender, and JEE rank. Notable examples include the Budhwanti Mrig Memorial scholarship, offering ₹1 lakh to first-year female BTech students, the Buti Foundation scholarship providing ₹45,000 for first-year BTech students based on merit, and the ABB and Bina Dewan Singh scholarships, which grant ₹25,000 for excellence in specific disciplines. These extensive financial aid packages are instrumental in democratizing access to elite technical education, fostering socio-economic diversity within the student body, and reinforcing the institution's commitment to meritocracy and student welfare.
